He was appointed Demonstrator in Anatomy at Trinity College and taught medical students anatomy for a full academic year before entering the Basic Surgical Training Programme in the United Kingdom. He rotated through orthopaedics and trauma surgery, urology and general surgery. He was awarded a Masters in Surgical Sciences from Imperial College, University of London for his work in bariatric surgery with a dissertation commendation for his submitted thesis on gut satiety hormones. Thereafter, he completed his higher surgical training in ENT in the Oxford and North Thames, (London) Training Programs with a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) awarded by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.  

 

He trained extensively in both adult and paediatric centres of excellence in London such as The Royal Marsden, Royal Free, Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospitals as well as having completed a further year and a half of Head and Neck training post FRCS at Barts and the Royal London hospital.

He returned to Singapore to join the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, National University Health System. While at NTFGH, he was lead laryngologist and single-handedly developed and ran the service with a dedicated group of Speech and Language Therapists. He specialised in voice and swallowing disorders as well as head and neck surgery performing minimally invasive surgery utilising lasers, sialendoscopy and open oncological procedures for cancers of the head and neck, thyroid and salivary glands.

He was awarded the Healthcare Manpower Development Award from NTFGH and Ministry of Health Singapore in 2014 where he spent a year at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (Université Catholique de Louvain, Mont-Godinne, Belgium) with Professors Marc Remacle and Georges Lawson where he underwent training in head and neck surgery and laryngology with a focus on robotics (flexible and da Vinci), lasers, phonosurgery, minimally invasive surgery and oncology in both children and adults. His familiarity with French as a language earned several accolades including the only Asian French speaking  international fellow during his tenure in Belgium.

Consequently, Dr Vyas is well versed in open and minimally invasive laryngeal surgery. He manages professional voice users such as singers and public speakers. He also has a keen interest in transgender voice surgery and is one of a handful of surgeons able to perform pitch altering surgery. He is an expert in lasers for head and neck surgery and has written multiple chapters on the subject. He also manages patients with paralysis to the voice box and swallowing disorders from neurological causes such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease.

Besides his adult practice, he has spent considerable time in specialist units focusing on paediatric ENT including head and neck and airway surgery i.e. Great Ormond Street Hospital London, the Nuffield Centre for Hearing at Gray’s Inn Road and Barts and The London NHS Trust. He has trained in the full variety of children’s ENT conditions including airway obstruction, sleep apnoea, foreign body removal, cochlear implantation and head and neck surgery. He also spent time on the cleft palate repair team at Great Ormond Street Hospital led by Professor Brian Sommerlad.

He is a member of the American Broncho-Esophageal Association, British Laryngological association, Asia-Pacific Laryngology Association, European Laryngology Society, reviewer for the European Archives of Otolaryngology, Affiliate of the National Cancer Institute of Singapore and fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and associate fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He has contributed to several book chapters, is the editor of a textbook of Neurolaryngology and has over a hundred peer-reviewed publications and international presentations altogether. His areas of publication are diverse including all areas of ENT surgery, general surgery and even metabolic medicine.

He was Adjunct Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore where he was actively involved in the training of residents and medical students in head and neck surgery and laryngology. He was part of the senior faculty for residency training between NUH and Ng Teng Fong Hospital. He is currently a member of the faculty at Duke-NUS Medical School where he teaches undergraduates Anatomy of the Head and Neck. While in the UK, he taught at a variety of levels to medical students from Oxford, Cambridge and the London Universities. He trained registrars in ENT at Barts and London as well as interviewed applicants for the University of London Medical School admissions.
